Rogue Wave
A dieci anni esatti dall’uscita di “Lava” escono queste nuove registrazioni del compositore di San Francisco che si muove nel solco della tradizione degli innovatori musicali provenienti dalla West Coast come Terry Riley e James Tenney. “Rogue Wave” è una retrospettiva che abbraccia oltre vent’anni della sua carriera attraverso sei rappresentative composizioni di ampio raggio sonoro e compositivo (coro, piano, elettronica, hardcore hip-hop, musica sinfonica, noise..). “This important new release places Brown at the forefront of new electronic composition, and finally sheds long overdue light on an important innovator whose work has been unjustly marginalized for years”. GARLAND, PETER
Love Songs
Tra i più importanti compositori americani, misconosciuto pioniere del minimalismo, amico di Conlon Nancarrow, John Cage ed Henry Partch, allievo di Harold Budd e James Tenney, Peter Garland è tutt’ora un infaticabile compositore, ricercatore, musicologo e saggista. Dopo il disco del 2000 “The Days Run Away”, “Love Songs” documenta l’ultra trentennale legame personale e musicale del compositore con l’amico William Winant. Prodotto da Winant, il CD comprende due brani composti appositamente per lui, ed una nuova registrazione del classico “Matachin Dances” composto per Malcolm Goldstein nel 1980. Minimalismo evocatico, melodico e romantico eseguito da un personnel di tutto rispetto (William Winant, Heather Heise, Carla Kihlstedt, Roy Malan, Timb Harris, Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio, David Abel, Julie Steinberg) a testimonianza della grande personalità di Garland e della rilevanza della sua figura per la musica americana contemporanea. A pioneer of live electronic music and one of America’s most adventurous composers, Alvin Curran has been walking his own eclectic path since the late 1960’s. The range and scope of his work is enormous, and unprecedented. Few composers have as many interests, or as much wit. This special compilation takes us on a whirlwind tour of fifteen of his most productive years (1987–2002), capturing both live and studio performances from around the world. Featuring a seductive work for chorus and ensemble, an incredible piece for eleven of the world’s largest and loudest musical instruments (shiphorns), an electroacoustic tribute to John Cage using the sound of his laughter and the purring of Merce Cunningham’s cat and much, much more. This long overdue release will surely confirm Alvin Curran as one of America’s most courageous and outrageous musical mavericks.

Born in 1932, an only child, in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. When I was very young, people got most of their entertainment from radio. They called it “playing the radio,” as if it were a musical instrument. That’s what I’ve tried to do in this piece. Since 1990, he retired, built a home studio and began work on what would become “Aerial.”

Inoltre troviamo u articolo di Linda Catlin Smith sulla sua musica, le solite rubriche e recensioni, ed, immancabile, il CD che ospita brani di Crawford, Jennifer Bird, Catlin Smith, Dallaire/Zhang ed il Quarto Paragrafo del Great Learning di Cornelius Cardew, nella intepretazione di Kurt Westerberg all’organo più un gruppo di esecutori alle voci ed alle percussioni. Si tratta di una interpretazione abbastanza recente (1995), ma che comunque riempie un piccolo buco, visto che del Quarto Paragrafo (così come di altri) non c’era traccia discografica. Testo inglese.
