Fortuna Pop Records News

F-POP! Propaganda (Slight Return). Click For Infos.

I did neglect to tell you one very important piece of information which is that Mark
Monnone of The Lucksmiths will be playing a short solo set as the
opening act on Friday night. So get there early so we can all bossa
nova.

Oh, and I’ve just put a few songs up on our myspace page, including a
new track from The Butterflies Of Love from their forthcoming album
Famous Problems. I’ll leave you alone now. Enjoy.

LES TRÈS BIEN ENSEMBLE A francophile, francophone, Barcelona-based band
with a passion for the elegance and seduction of the best French pop,
so much so that despite being Spanish all their songs are sung in
French! Influences range from Michel Polnareff to Francoise Hardy, and
of course the unbeatable Serge Gainsbourg and his cast of fragile
and/or perverse female partners (France Gall, Jane Birkin, Brigitte
Bardot). As if she were one of the muses idolized by her hero
Gainsbourg, Suzette knows how to sing and perform sounding sexy, or
childish, or both things at the same time. Their sound is rooted in the
classic recordings of the 60s with exuberant orchestral arrangements,
while their songwriting is inspired by nouvelle vague’s soundtracks and
the Brazilian bossanova, as exemplified by last year’s debut album on
Elefant Records “Doux-Amer”.

THE WOULD-BE-GOODS Eccentric and evocative guitar pop helmed by Jessica
Griffin, enigmatic star of eighties cult label él, with her crew of
elegant rascals – Peter Momtchiloff, guitarist (Talulah Gosh,
Razorcuts, Heavenly, Scarlet’s Well) and occasional songsmith; Debbie
Green, drummer and darling of the London nineties garage scene (Thee
Headcoatees); and ex-Adam and the Ant and Monochrome Set bassist Andy
Warren. Their fourth album ‘The Morning After’, released last year on
Fortuna POP!, was full of melancholy charm and wit coupled with a
classic guitar pop sound ranging from new folk, tango to garage rock.
Love songs to lions, frolics in the Garden of Eden, French Casanovas
and personal demons await you. Let the Would-Be-Goods be your guides.

THE CUT-OUTS The Cut-Outs feature members of Airport Girl, The Fat
Tulips and The Lucksmiths and play garage rock for pop kids with short,
daft guitar solos and an unerring ear for a tune (often their own). And
with a member of London’s all girl 60s dance troupe The Actionettes on
drums, there’s always at least one band member on the beat.

*** HEY! HEY! FPOP!FEST! ***

Fortuna POP! is ten years old this year (or is it eleven? hell, I can
never remember) and to celebrate we’ve put together three nights of
gigs at London’s coolest venue The Luminaire on August 29th, 30th and
31st. It’s an incredible line-up, with The Lucksmiths, The Butterflies
Of Love, Bearsuit, Comet Gain, Cannonball Jane, The Would-Be-Goods,
Milky Wimpshake, Airport Girl, The Chemistry Experiment, The Loves,
Fanfarlo and Finlay all confirmed. We’d really like you to be there
(yes, you! it’s no good looking over your shoulder – you!) and not
outside sobbing on the pavement, so season tickets for all three nights
have just gone on sale and you, the Fortuna POP! mailing
list, are the first to know. As an added incentive the first tickets
are at the bargain price of £21, after that they’ll go up, so get in
there while you can. We’re incredibly excited about these shows and
hope you are too.

*** RECORD NEWS ***

The new album by Tender Trap ‘6 Billion People’ is now officially in
the shops, and it’s a bit of a humdinger. I think we can safely say
that any fans of Amelia Fletcher’s previous incarnations (Talulah Gosh,
Heavenly, Marine Research) will not be disappointed, especially with
Claudia Gonson of The Magnetic Fields beating the traps and singing
backing vocals. Tasty fanzine described it as “one of the best pop
albums you’ll hear this year” while Plan B said it was “as refreshingly
infectious and as downright fab as anything she’s done in the past”.

Cannonball Jane’s new single ‘Take It To Fantastic’, described in Time
Out as “Equal parts De La Soul and a Latino Doris Day – fantastic
indeed” is in the shops NOW!

Finlay’s new album ‘The Fall of Mary’ is also out NOW! The latest in an
increasingly hyperbolic series of reviews reads “the best, most
hypnotic, moving, engaging, skewed, lo-fi, glittering, colourful,
concise, inventive guitar record of 2006” (courtesy of Robots and
Electronic Brains webzine).

You can buy these records direct from us by either sending a cheque
made payable to ‘Fortuna POP!’ to 4 Mayfield House, Rushcroft Road,

per item for europe, and £1 per item for the rest of the world.

*** FANFARLO SHOWS ***

Fanfarlo have a few shows coming up that they would like you to know
about…

23 Jun 2006 13:00 – London Oasis (Architecture Week) Chetwoods, 12-13
Clerkenwell, London, ,UK – This will probably be our strangest gig so
far. Basically they built this very tall and narrow stage for the
London Architecture Week and will have people performing during two
days. On the second day we will play on it. It’s outside, in a square
in Clerkenwell, in the early afternoon. I’ve seen photos of this stage,
which is not yet built and is apparently inspired by a flower, and it’s
a right mindf*ck. Come down and watch, if not for the music, then for
the photo opportunities.

25 Jun 2006 16:30 – PopArt Weekender (Lark In The Park) Islington,
London

27 Jun 2006 21:00 – White Heat/Love Is All
Madame Jojo’s, Brewer St, Soho, London – £5

4 Jul 2006 – Kiss The Dirt (Spread Eagle) Kingsland Road, London
