Fortuna Pop Records News

F-POP! Propaganda. Click For Infos.

It seems like one amazing gig after another at the moment, what with
the incredible Tilly And The Wall show at the Buffalo Bar last Friday
and the first night of our 3 day Fortuna POP! spectacular tonight at
The Luminaire. If you’re coming to any of these shows please make the
effort to arrive early. We’ve deliberately put the three best bands on
the label on first, The Loves, Fanfarlo and Finlay, to encourage you to
do this and they’ll be starting at 7:30 sharp, with doors at 7:00.
Season tickets are now sold out, as are individual tickets for the
Wednesday night starring the Lucksmiths, but there will be tickets
available on the door for Tuesday (now featuring the excellent Darren
Hayman ex of Hefner and his band) and for Thursday. Disappointed
Lucksmiths fans should console themselves with a ticket to their Spitz
show on the 13th of September when they will be playing a special
extended set, but hurry as it’s selling fast. If you live near Bath or
Nottingham look out for The Butterflies Of Love heading your way next
weekend and, finally, we have a great bill at the Buffalo Bar next
month with the brilliant Monkey Swallow The Universe from Sheffield.
Ticket are now on sale for this. All the details you could ever need
are below, and I promise the next mailout will have far less gigs in
and much more exciting record news.

THE LUCKSMITHS Three years since their last visit to Europe, The
Lucksmiths make their long-awaited return from Australia with a bounty
of tales and songs from their most recent album “Warmer Corners”
(Fortuna Pop!/Candle Records). The Lucksmiths (singing drummer Tali
White, guitarist Marty Donald, and bass player Mark Monnone) were set
on foot in a bayside suburb of Melbourne back in the early ’90s, and
continue to beguile audiences with their songs of modern front-porch
romance. The addition of Louis Richter on guitar in 2004 has seen The
Lucksmiths operating as a full-time four-piece. Warmer Corners, the
band’s ninth album has found The Lucksmiths at peak form, happily
continuing the tradition of Australian pop storytelling as forged by
the likes of the Go-Betweens, The Cannanes, and Paul Kelly.
“Idiosyncratic but accessible, literate but unpretentious, gentle but
not weak, sincere not so much in presentation as in presence”.
(Pitchfork) www.thelucksmiths.com.au www.myspace.com/lucksmiths

MICHAELMAS Fron London, Michaelmas play pop music and are not ashamed
to say so. Rising, phoenix-like, from the ashes of Adekola Sound in
early 2002, Michaelmas have played shows with, amongst others, Calvin
Johnson, Cass McCombs, Jens Lekman, The Would-Be-Goods, The Eighteenth
Day Of May, Jeffrey Greene, Camera Obscura and Herman Dune. Currently,
Michaelmas are a four piece with Jude adding violin, melodica and
harmonies to their live shows and their new recordings. “Big-hearted,
big-chorused songs about love, lust and the weather”

MONKEY SWALLOWS THE UNIVERSE Monkey Swallows the Universe are an
acoustic indiepop band from Sheffield, centred around the original
founding duo of Nat Johnson & Kevin Gori, who formed the band in 2004.
The band expanded in 2005 to include Catherine Tully on violin, Andy
George on cello & Rob Dean on drums. In February 2006 the band released
their debut album ‘The Bright Carvings’, on the independent record
label Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation and released a single
with Thee SPC in July 2006. The band have supported Mercury-nominated
Richard Hawley and Camera Obscura on tour. They have performed sessions
on both BBC Radio 6 and XFM. They have been variously described as
“something special” (Stylus Magazine), “big big news” (Rough Trade) and
“boss” (Richard Hawley.). www.mstu.co.uk www.myspace.com/mstu

FANFARLO Last year the then 23-year-old Simon Aurell left his native
Sweden and moved to London, armed only with a headful of songs and a
laptop on which to record them. A cdr of 4 songs was duly produced and
as Simon sold or gave them away people began to sit up and take notice.
A band was assembled with country music aficionado Justin Finch (bass)
and multi-instrumentalist Leon Beckenham (Keys, Trumpet). Gigs
followed, including prestigious support slots for Guillemots,
Semifinalists and Love Is All, for promoters as diverse as White Heat
and How Does It Feel To To Be Loved? (to whose compilation album they
also contributed a track), and in places as far away as New Zealand.
Influenced by The Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Pavement, Neutral Milk
Hotel and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! the band release their debut single
on Fortuna POP! this month with an album to follow in the new year.
This is fall in love, take no prisoners pop at its very best. They’re
out for your heart. Get ready to have it stolen.
“One of the most affecting songs I’ve heard this year, like a more
scaled-down, vulnerable Arcade Fire with achingly mournful vocals.”
(Tasty fanzine)  www.fanfarlo.com www.myspace.com/fanfarlo

POCKETBOOKS Pocketbooks are an indiepop band from London, with a
fondness for handclaps, harmonies and jangly guitars. The band appear
on the new How Does It Feel To Be Loved? compilation and played their
first gig in July 2006. Think Camera Obscura, The Pastels, Belle and
Sebastian, The Sundays and Tindersticks. www.myspace.com/pocketbooks

THE MARY EPWORTH BAND Mary Epworth writes music with roots in country
and folk, filtered through a love of sunshine pop, gypsy music and
psychedelia. The band have been compared to “a seafaring mazzy star”
and “like Kristin Hersh covering Johnny Cash” but most people say they
sound like “dark dark folk” Crazy Horse, The Band, Fairport, etc.
