Fringes Recording (Italy) :

Robin Hayward  “Valve Division, music for solo tuba” [cd] Fringes 19

First solo release by the Berlin-based tuba player.
“Though not specifically about the tuba, the three pieces presented here reflect particular ways of regarding the instrument. Whereas in the first two pieces, Dial and Coil, it is viewed as a labyrinth of tubing within which air may be trapped and redirected, in the final piece, Valve Division, it is seen as a collection of individual tube lengths, tuned to one another by positioning the valve slides in whole number proportions to each other. Valves play an important role in the first two pieces too, as it is through rotating them in their sockets that the air becomes trapped – also a sort of valve division, this time through 360 degrees. I also view these pieces as a response to the question of what to do next, which arose around the year 2000, after I had been part of developing a specific approach to collective improvisation in Berlin. From my perspective this had involved focusing on the microscopic details of the sound itself through reducing other elements, such as group interaction, to a minimum. I decided to concentrate on composition while further developing the playing techniques and sound materials I had been exploring in such groups as Das Kreisen (with Burkhard Beins and Annette Krebs) and roananax (with Axel Dörner, Annette Krebs and Andrea Neumann). Abstract-narrative is the term that in my opinion best describes the music that followed. While still clearly informed by the preceding pure-sound aesthetic, certain narrative elements have been introduced into it, particularly involving the consideration of expectation and surprise. Though this paradigm is perhaps most evident in Dial and Coil, Valve Division shares an abstract-narrative aesthetic in that the objective fact of the tuba’s unconventional tuning is gradually unfolded over the course of the piece.” (Robin Hayward)
